ChatGPT Altas

A browser with ChatGPT built in, but now deprecated.

I started using Atlas mainly because ChatGPT’s desktop app kept plugging it, reminding me of its existence over and over. But once I installed it, I had to admit it was cleaner and simpler than Chrome, and more practical than Safari, since it runs on Chromium.

I’m not sure it was the first browser with an AI sidebar, but it did change the way I work. It felt like an early prototype of an agentic tool: Atlas could take over a task on certain websites. It even shipped a preview feature called Computer Use, which let the AI search, click and browse on your behalf. (Now it is a skill in Codex.)

Maybe it’s never a polished commercial product, but I really liked it. Atlas has now been folded into a ChatGPT sidebar extension for Chrome — same features, as if the browser had never existed. And of course, I have to return to Chrome now.
